History:
The "Join, or Die" political cartoon was created by Benjamin Franklin and first published in the Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. The intent of the drawing was to unite the colonies against the French and their Native allies at the start of the French and Indian War. The image became a powerful symbol in colonial opposition to the Stamp Act and other taxes, which eventually led to the American Revolution.
